Highlights from Convention

Representing Dallas Alumni at the convention were President Cynthia Wadley, District Director Sandra McMillen, and former national and chapter officer Tena Hehn. Former Dallasite and Triangle editor Nancy Laine (also co-founder of the San Antonio Alumni Chapter), greeted old friends.

Retiring International President and Dallas Alumni Chapter member, Wynona Lipsett, turned over the gavel to incoming President Dr. Frances Irwin. She is shown here with husband Don.

Thoughts on Convention 2003

Mu Phi Epsilon will be 100 years old on November 13, 2003. What a celebration there was in Cincinnati in August! I wish each one of you could have been there. The music was superb and performed at every business meeting, luncheon, dinner, many concerts and two lobby sings. What else would one expect at a Mu Phi convention?

Friends that I made I will cherish in memory and some of them I hope to see again soon. Martha Whitmore, president of Denton Alumni and Dana Seals, Delta Pi at Tarleton were my tablemates at the business meetings. We enjoyed getting to know each other.

Harmony was evident in all that we did. Everything went smoothly, thanks to efficient planning. When help was needed, the response was swift. Of course, there was discussion on some issues, but all were resolved peacefully. There was a great feeling of anticipation, excitement and fellowship throughout the whole convention. It was an experience I shall never forget.

Finally to witness Wynona, confident, efficient and yet so warm and personable in her role as International President was such a pleasure. She sang beautifully the night of the banquet. What a talented lady. Hopefully she will be with us often in the future.

Cynthia

Cynthia Wadley is shown here accepting the award for Best Alumni Website, along with an honorable mention for our newsletter. Tracie Smith accepted an award for Best Collegiate Website for her chapter, Alpha Sigma at Abilene Christian University.

Financial Considerations

In October, Cynthia shared with the chapter the following summary of a letter from International Executive Board to be read to all chapters.

The fraternity is $60,000.00 in debt from the 2003 convention due to:

1. Fund collected for 2 years instead of 3

2. An expected grant that was not awarded

3. Stock investments down

4. Costs of convention exceeded estimates

Ways to eliminate debt:

1. Every chapter is asked to have a fund raising event. Kurt-Alexander Zeller will match the highest amount raised by an alumni chapter up to $5,000.00.

2. 75 bonus points to each chapter having a fundraiser.

3. Prize for the most creative idea.

4.   Some companies double or triple donations to professional organizations.  Check with David Champion for list.

5. Sell "Pampered Chef" items and receive 40% of the total product sales.  Remember Pampered Chef parties are similar to Tupperware parties, but there are no parties; just look for the form in the Fall issue of the Triangle and turn in your order.

The Sterling Competition winner, Marek Szpakiewicz, cello, will be concertizing the next two years. Let us consider sponsoring him in a concert here.
