MU PHI DALLAS ALUMNI LOSES TWO OF ITS OWN

The music world lost two former SMU faculty members who were active in Mu Phi Epsilon – Lloyd Pfautsch, a patron and husband of member Edie Pfautsch, and Ruth Rutherford, a member. Both lived full and productive lives and contributed much to the world of music, their students and to Mu Phi.

The articles that appeared in the Dallas Morning News are posted here:

Lloyd Pfautsch

Dr. Pfautsch died around 10 am on Friday, October 3, following a stroke on the previous Tuesday.  He had just turned 82 on September 14.  The family held a private memorial service on Sunday.  The public service on Tuesday, October 7 at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church was a glorious tribute, well attended by many former students, choir directors, SMU faculty, Mu Phis and friends. Terry Price, choir director, led a choir made up of PHPC choir members and others who had studied with or sung under Dr. Pfautsch. The selections of music for choir, violin duo, organ and baritone as well as Biblical readings and hymns had been chosen ahead by him for this service. It was beautiful and uplifting. As Tena Hehn said, “That gorgeous deep voice, his wonderful smile, sense of humor and gift of music will be missed.  Please keep Edie, the children and grandchildren in your thoughts and prayers.”

A Lloyd Pfautsch Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 14th at 7:30 p.m. at Perkins Chapel on the SMU Campus.  (This is roughly at the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Hillcrest, north of Highland Park United Methodist Church at the intersection itself.) Those who wish to sing in the "congregational choir" will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel.

Gary Minton is putting together a Litany of Remembrances to be read responsively with the congregation singing the first four notes of "I thank you God." If you have any brief "remembrances" that can be incorporated into it, please send them to Gary Minton at: MintonG@cfbisd.edu. A book of remembrances will also be given to Edie should you wish to send something.  Gary's work address is:

Ruth Rutherford

Ruth Rankin Rutherford spent more than 50 years in Dallas teaching piano, 30 of them at Southern Methodist University.  She died at her Denton home in October. She was 99.

Married to Paris Rutherford in 1929, she began her career as a teacher at The Hockaday School in 1938. In 1942, she joined the music faculty at SMU, where she became a professor of piano performance; she retired in the mid‑1970s. While teaching, Mrs. Rutherford was the ensemble pianist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra during the tenure of Walter Hendl. As a concert pianist, she performed in New York, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Ruth spent several summers volunteering at Philmont, the national training center for the Boy Scouts of America.

She is remembered by Frances Stuart, who said Ruth “imparted her love of music to all these she came into contact with. She had a wonderful hand and a very powerful technique. [Her students] showed such special care in their playing because of her.” Her son, Paris, also praised her positive and encouraging methods of teaching.

Also thanks to Martha and co-hostesses Sharon Kraus, Pat Hill, Sandra McMillen, Frances Stuart, and Judy Dardaganian who provided some delicious snacks.

Frances Stuart presented a thank you gift to Edie Pfautsch from the chapter for her many years of service to the Library Concert Series. Edie has stepped down this year.

She replied:

SO MANY THANKS: to ALL of you for the Borders gift card presented to me at the September meeting - to FRANCES for her job summary, words of appreciation and gift; to CYNTHIA for taking on the task of finding new coordinators, and especially to CLAUDIA and MELANIE for being so willing and able to take over. And always to MARY and KAY for continuing yet again to keep our community service Sunday Concert Season alive and well.

LETTER FROM CYNTHIA

Dear Mu Phi Members,

The musical world lost two prominent and illustrious members this month:  Lloyd Pfautsch and Ruth Rutherford. They will always be remembered here in Dallas and also by others far away.  We Mu Phis mourn this great loss, but we rejoice in their accomplishments and their contributions to untold numbers who studied with them or were inspired by their music.  Their influence will continue on indefinitely.  Lloyd Pfautsch was a patron of the Dallas Alumni Chapter for seventeen years.  Ruth Rutherford became a member by special election.  This is proof that patrons and the special election process are important parts of Mu Phi Epsilon.

The September meeting with Mu Chi and Epsilon Epsilon members as guests and performers was a treat for us. What a bunch of talented kids! Everyone enjoyed the social time. Martha Peak was again a gracious hostess.

The October meeting in connection with the concert at the library was a success.  I counted over fifty at the program. Canticum Novum Chamber Choir was outstanding.

The November 11th meeting will be just two days before the actual centennial date of the founding of Mu Phi Epsilon on November 13, 1903.  Come to commemorate our founders and to celebrate 100 years of our fraternity.

Cherie Bell’s mother had a heart attack in September.

FURTHER INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Cynthia shared with the chapter the following summary of a letter from International Executive Board to be read to all chapters.

The fraternity is $60,000.00 in debt from the 2003 convention due to:

1. Fund collected for 2 years instead of 3

2. An expected grant that was not awarded

3. Stock investments down

4. Costs of convention exceeded estimates

Ways to eliminate debt:

1.  Every chapter is asked to have a fund raising event. Kurt-Alexander Zeller will match the highest amount raised by an alumni chapter up to $5,000.00.

2.  75 bonus points to each chapter having a fundraiser.

3.  Prize for the most creative idea.

4.   Some companies double or triple donations to professional organizations.  Check with David Champion for list.

5.  Sell "Pampered Chef" items and receive 40% of the total product sales.  Remember Pampered Chef parties are similar to Tupperware parties, but there are no parties; just look for the form in the Fall issue of the Triangle and turn in your order.

The Sterling Competition winner, Marek Szpakiewicz, cello, will be concertizing the next two years. Let us consider sponsoring him in a concert here.
