Greetings
from Sylvia
Dear
Mu Phis,
Our
October Meeting was a special opportunity to visit with several members
whom we have not seen for a while, including
Susan Poelchau, who is back in Dallas after many years in
Germany. We enjoyed
the meeting to the fullest: Good
music, good fellowship and good food.
I
need to mention several items from.
The convention planning committee is busy and wants us to be
involved: By
contributing money, performing
in Outreach concerts (in Cincinnati), and/or
participating in an orchestra and chorus.
I will have the information at the November meeting.
Please
remember to keep a record of your SERV
hours. Make a note in a special place in your Calendar.
You can then add the hours when it is time to give me the
information for the report that goes to the International office (May).
Mu
Phi Epsilon has an accompanist award of $1,000, not limited by age,
financial need, or projects in the United States.
Deadline is March 1. Call
the president or get information at the meeting, if you are interested.
November
12 will be our annual Founders Day celebration at the home of Edie
Pfautsch. Ninety-nine
years! We will
recognize Dundee Dillard as a seventy-year member and Edie Pfautsch as a
sixty-year member.
Plan
to attend!

Concert
Series
By Edie Pfautsch,
Chairperson
|
|
November
always signifies the close of the fall Sunday Concert Series. It ended
with a beautiful piano duo: Clarice Candamio and Marta Urrea. Note:
Clarice is a MΦE member and studied organ with Mildred Andrews at
U. of Oklahoma. Mildred, an impressive woman, was one of our national
officers and in charge of performers the year we held the convention
here. There was a small but enthusiastic audience for their program of
the Mozart Sonata in C major, Schubert's Fantasie in F minor,
D940 and Mendelssohn's Allegro Brilliante in A major Op.92.
Eat your hearts out, pianists.
Please
note the word “small" above. You all know the problem with
audience variation. We have been following the same formula for many
years. We let performers know that much (most) of their audience will
come from family, friends, students, whomever they get around to
informing. And Mary helps them with a card format for copying. Kay sends
out the publicity regularly. We try, in other words. For the past few
years we have had a total of about six regulars who show up for almost
all recitals. This year it is down to three plus occasional community
college students with their notebooks. Audiences this fall have ranged
from over 100 (very rare!) to under 20 (a very empty feeling).
So,
I am confirming what we have all been aware of for a long time. Dallas
does not know about us. So what do we do? Is it time to "think
outside the box?" And what would that mean? Let's all give it
thought.
Several
years ago I wrote letters to Olin Chism and Scot Cantrell suggesting
that this is a well-kept secret that could be highlighted in some way,
maybe by them. No response. Maybe Steve Blow. Tena Murdock includes the
programs on her website and has printed a nice flyer with the schedule
for all the branch libraries. Time to get out of the box? The fall
season was impressive despite having to deal with two very late
cancellations which we were able to solve with contacts from previous
programs: Deborah Austin and the Landefelds of the Suzuki Institute of
Dallas.
Let
me know your ideas, in or out of the box, to make our wonderful concert
presence known in Dallas. We begin again on February 2 with another
great lineup. Let there be an AUDIENCE!
All
concerts are at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library
Auditorium
1515
Young Street, Dallas TX
Sundays
at 3:00 PM
Concerts
are FREE and open to the public

MΦE
Centennial Celebration
|
|
Remember that the Mu Phi Epsilon 100th
year celebration is in Cincinnati, Ohio - August 6-12th, 2003. Please
contribute to a fund to help support it if you are able. Checks are
payable to: Mu Phi Epsilon Centennial Fund. Send to Mu Phi Epsilon, 4202
Atlantic Ave #202, Long Beach, CA 90807-2826.
Nancy Laine reports that there will be a
raffle to help raise funds for this event. Grand prize is a trip to the
convention, but there are other great prizes (Palm Pilot, digital
camera, etc.). You can purchase one ticket for $5 or five tickets for
$20. The upcoming Triange will have forms to mail in to Gerri Flynn, but
a note with a check would wold just as well.
Tip:
Nancy also says to look for a photo and a little blurb about Katie
Freiberger in the upcoming Triangle.

heal the body, strengthen the mind and unlock the creative spirit.
She cited examples using music therapy that she uses for herself and
to help adjust the mood of her students in creating a positive
teaching/learning environment. She included sample music and
resources for teachers to use. Many teachers have contacted
her for help in locating music suitable for use in their classrooms. |
