Message from Mary Ann

Recently Susan Poelchau and I attended a meeting at the Dallas Public Library of many music groups about town. The second such gathering, this one included a panel of Scott Cantrell, Dallas Morning News music critic; Gregory Davis, WRR general manager; Anne Bothwell, KERA Arts Web Portal Coordinator; and a representative from the Dallas public access television. We learned some interesting things: WRR does not have to air public service announcements because it carries the Dallas City Council meetings, enough time to cover its requirements and some important things: KERA is launching a massive effort to post a calendar of arts events online.

So many of you are involved in so many other musical enterprises that this meeting will touch you in some way. Our area has a rich and varied musical life. How wonderful that we can contribute to its success.

I look forward to seeing you all at our spring meetings and at Sunday Concerts.

In friendship,
Mary Ann

Library Concert Notes

Susan Poelchau, Chair

The spring Library Concert Series promises to be an interesting and varied one, with performers ranging from solo pianists to a trombone ensemble! Please look through the Series announcement in this Newsletter and plan to attend at least one of our fine recitals. If you could help out with announcing, that would be wonderful. First-timers can work a concert together with an experienced member to learn the really simple “ropes.” A signup sheet will be passed around at the February meeting.

I am hoping to present a November, 2009 memorial piano recital in honor of Frances Stuart and her service to the Series. Nov 9 would be my preferred date. I’ll be contacting students, friends and colleagues of Frances later on to put together a recital. If you are interested in playing a piece in honor of the occasion, please contact me.

A report on the upkeep of the piano will be given at the March meeting. See you at the Library!

Please support our Sunday Concert series by

attending these concerts and bringing your friends; come hear our first performer Leslie Spotz, who is Mu Phi faculty advisor at Tarleton State University in Stephenville; she and her students played for us last fall
giving students and interested friends a copy of the schedule. She will be back with some students in March.
announcing at a program
donating extra funds toward our printing costs for the series and piano maintenance

You can find a PDF file of the concert schedule to e-mail your friends on the Library website: http://www.dallaslibrary.org/pdfs/LIBRARYCONCERTSERIESSpring-2008.pdf

All concerts are on Sundays at 3 PM at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library Auditorium – 1515 Young St, Dallas
And are FREE. Schedule, programs and performer vitas are available as received on www.muphiepsilondallas.org – Check Sunday Concerts.

Wynona Lipsett reports: In Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, I am serving this biennium as Area VIII Coordinator. I have 15 chapters to look after located throughout central Texas. The job is quite similar to the days when I served Mu Phi as a Province Governor and visited the chapter throughout the province. I'm also the state pianist for this biennium - that means I accompany the choir and other special events at the state conventions.

Meghan Gomen, Mu Chi, is now assistant orchestra director at Clark HS & Plano East HS in Plano.

Kaleena Loard, Mu Chi, is an assistant band director and flute instructor in the Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD.

Past Meetings

November 12, 2007

Edie Pfautsch was the hostess; Pat Hill, Sue Johnson and Ruth Reed were co-hostesses. Maryann “bragged” on the chapter winning awards for the best chapter in the province, award for Sadie Rowe’s 400 SERV hours and Orah Ashley Lamke award to Mary Williams.

She conducted our Founder’s Day ceremony with our hostess Edie Pfautch and Sylvia Lerch assisting.

Members heard Cavatina by Stanley Myers, Sicilienne by Fauré, Piece en forme Habanera by Ravel, and Golliwog’s Cakewalk by Debussy played on English Horn and piano by Frances Estes and Katy Freiberger.

The Dallas Ensemble of Viols returned to play some music from the 1600s on a variety of violas da gamba. Jud Maynard, Hazel Mosely, our own Susan Poelchau and Susan Scheib played “Paduan & Two Courantes” from Ludi musici (1621) by Samuel Scheidt.

In keeping with a one-per-year series, one of our members was featured in an interview – Edie Pfautsch (right) was interviewed by her longtime friend Joan Merriman, giving us a look at Edie’s early life in Minnesota, days in New York as a singer and bride of choral conductor/composer Lloyd Pfautsch, and their early days at Illinois Wesleyan before coming to Dallas. Many members contributed memories of Edie in memorable performances.

Edie also had on display chapter scrapbooks going back many years that were assembled by Kay Newman, Francelle Bellenger and others. She completed the last scrapbook after Kay died last year through 2006. Many thanks to her for taking on this project.
