Fall is arriving in Dallas once again. Our community
musical scene is in full swing and we are gearing up for all the
holidays. Everyone’s calendars seem to be bursting at the seams.
Somehow our loyal Mu Phi chapter members are still coming to meetings,
participating as performers and hostesses, and enhancing all our lives
with the gifts they are sharing.

CHAPTER
NEWS
National
awards and certificates were presented at the November meeting by
Cynthia Wadley.
Honored
were:
Anne Stone – 60 year member
and Lucille Briggs –
70 year member;
Sylvia Taylor Lerch and Susan Polechau,
who both contributed over 400 volunteer (SERV) hours last year; and Mary
Williams for our chapter’s webpage.
Cynthia
Wadley, Susan Polechau and Kay
Newman participated in our Founder’s Day ceremony, rededicating us
to our goals of advancement of music.
Tena Hehn accompanied
singing of The Triangle.
Our December meeting will include informal singing of several anthems,
directed by Phyllis Wilson. Correction: She asks that members wanting to
participate in this choral group meet at the meeting - we will not rehearse. The entire membership will also sight-read some
Christmas music during the program. Thanks to Phyllis for arranging this
choral “happening.”
Keep
up with the Dallas Chapter by consulting our website: www.muphiepsilondallas.org
where you can get our newsletter (and back newsletters), updated
information, our Sunday Concert
Series schedule (and sometimes changes!) plus biographies of the performers.
The
deadline for the next newsletter will be January 25, 2005 - txtravel@flash.net.

MEMBER NEWS
Sharon
Kraus’ mom, after moving to
a retirement center and losing her husband in summer, has suffered some
heart problems and just received a pacemaker. We wish her good health.
June Tighe has sold her home and is living permanently at her son’s house in Frisco. Our condolences to Nikki Wilbanks, whose mother died recently.
Lucille
Briggs has moved to an assisted living home in Lake Highlands. Contact the President or
Webmaster for her new address.
Phyllis Wilson has just begun her
new job as interim Minister of Music at Suncreek UMC. Correction: She
finished that job and is now Minister of Music at UMC of Cedar Hill. She recently went
to Holland and Belgium with her sisters for a ten-day tour. One sister
lives in Atlanta and the other in Virginia and they greatly enjoyed it.
Mary
Williams just returned from a
two-month driving trip to Wisconsin for her 50th high school
reunion, then east to see friends and relatives, see the changing fall
color in New England and visit places she has always wanted to go,
returning via New York, Philadelphia, Williamsburg, Monticello and the
Appalachian mountains. Great time! Her son, Dan, held down the fort at
home. He is a computer technician who will fix your computer for you or
install new software or hardware. He’s good (but unemployed) so give
him a call if you need help at Mary's phone number or seeker04@sbcglobal.net.
Mary can also train you to use your computer in your home or office.

FALL
MEETINGS
September
The September meeting was held at Martha Peak's lovely
home. Is this becoming a tradition? Yearbooks were given
out, the library series was emphasized and SERV hours were explained and
encouraged.
Members of Mu Chi Chapter at SMU presented a program
featuring a string quartet playing Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, En
Bateau by Debussy for harp and flute, a clarinet duo and a clarinet
sonata. It was a great program by talented young students.
Co-hostesses were Fran Pearson, Becky Corley, Sharon Kraus, Sandra
McMillen and Frances Stuart.
The Dallas Public Library was the location for a
brief October meeting before the concert in the auditorium. The
Taylor family was
a treat: Mary Ann, flute; Jerry, piano and son David, trombone. How nice to have a family
perform. Claudia Jameson,
soprano, accompanied by Shelia Harms, completed the outstanding program.
Composers included Bach, Granados, Fauré, Telemann, Poulenc, Obradors, Battista, Hindemith, Schubert and Black.
November
Our 101st Founder’s Day ceremony, meeting and program was held
at the home of Sylvia Taylor Lerch. As well as being Founder’s Day, it
was also the 93rd birthday of Frances Stuart ! and our
cake honored both occasions.
Soprano Adele Wilson was a guest soloist, accompanied by Tena Hehn. Adele is a
talented Highland Park high school student. She sang songs by Mozart,
Fauré, Donaudi and Kingsley.
Ellen Stamelos presented an informative theory lecture
on finding the climax in a piece and using that knowledge in performing
the work. She demonstrated her points in performances of three Chopin
preludes.
Julie Schmitt
and Susan Polechau performed a tango and Alexander’s
Ragtime Band in enjoyable duo piano arrangements.
Fran Pearson, Soprano, accompanied by Danny Harp, sang songs of Beethoven, Fauré and
Obradors. It was a splendid program for a celebration.
Co-hostesses were Susan Polechau, Edie Pfautsch, Joann Turrentine and Anne Stone.

CYNTHIA’S
NOTES
Dear Mu Phis,
As I write this
letter the day after our November meeting, I am still excited about the
evening. Attendance was the highest that I can remember in many
years. Twenty-eight signed in and several of the guests had not
signed the sheet. The varied program was a real treat. What
a beautiful voice Adele Wilson has. I had never heard Fran sing,
so was glad to confirm reports of a lovely voice. Ellen's
demonstration was a pleasant change and how about the rousing end to the
program with the Alexander's Ragtime Band arrangement. Way
to go, girls.
There
were special certificates and awards presented. Anne Stone and Ruth
Reed received certificates for 60 years in Mu Phi and Lucille Briggs for
70 years. Aren't we proud of them? Mary Williams did it
again. She is Webmaster of the Year for 2003-2004 and of course,
the Dallas Website was the best in the fraternity. As our
international president, Fran Irwin said, Mary should write a book.
Founders Day Ceremony is always a special occasion. This year we
collected $13.36.
The yearbook lists a Mu Phi Epsilon Womens Chorus as part of the December program.
Phyllis says the only rehearsal will be 30 minutes before the meeting,
if there is one at all. Sight-reading perhaps? Sounds like
fun. Come and join in. Everyone is welcome.
Looking ahead to
the joint meeting of Mu Phi and SAI, we will be the hosts at Highland
Park Presbyterian Church. Save the date, Monday, February 14.
One more meeting and the year will be half over. Let's have a big turnout in
December to celebrate the holidays.

MUSIC NOTE from Mary
During my travels, I came across the Bagaduce Music Lending library in Blue Hill,
Maine.
My hosts were volunteers there. The library was started by someone who donated a huge collection of choral scores and it has continued to grow; it now has a good selection of orchestral, chamber music, solo music for voice, piano, and all instruments as well.
An
organization can join with a $25 fee per year and borrow music for as long as needed for
rehearsal and performance - 3-4 months - for a small fee per score ($.50
- $4.00). This is also a good place to donate music you no longer need.
