President Pat’s
Letter
Dear Mu Phis,
Just a note to say I’m looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting. I was disappointed in our attendance down at the Library last month, but, evidently, we didn’t get the word out. Those of you who did not attend missed a most wonderful piano program by Leslie Spotz, who is on the faculty at Tarleton State University. She gave us an outstanding rendition of two pieces by Schumann followed by the “Appassionata” Sonata by Beethoven and Chopin’s B minor Sonata. Before the program, we went upstairs to see the most informative and well-displayed exhibit of “Texas Our Texas” by William Marsh. I was fortunate to have been at TCU when he was on the faculty there.
We have another good program to look forward on Tuesday, November 9th at Pat Suitt’s house. We will be celebrating Chopin with Zelda Hantz giving us his biography and performing one of his Etudes. William Jameson will also be playing some Chopin. We will then celebrate Founders Day with a brief open ceremony, so please feel free to bring Patrons and friends. Our Treasurer, Sandra McMillen, had knee surgery in October so we’re hoping she will be well enough to join us.
See you Tuesday night at 7:30 pm.
Pat Hill

Concert Series
We have two remaining concerts for fall, though our performer for this Saturday’s concert has cancelled due to illness. Originally scheduled were:
November 6 John Solomons, piano
November 13 Kristie Janczyk, piano and Jamie Bergamasco, soprano with
Matt Metcalf, piano
Replacing John will be Jo Zhou, a graduate piano student of Carole Leone’s at SMU. Hopefully we will be able to hear John another time. We resume concerts again on January 29, 2011. Remember, you can see the schedule (check for changes!) programs and biographies of performers on the
Concert Series tab.

Fall Meetings
September Meeting
We kicked off our fall season with a luncheon meeting at the Chimneyhill Clubhouse. Sandra McMillen gave an interesting presentation on the founding of Mu Phi Epsilon which she had seen at the convention in Cincinnati – the birthplace of Mu Phi. She also read the essay by Kurt-Alexander Zeller - “No Shrinking Violets” - about the real meaning of the fraternity’s symbol, the violet. If you missed it, you can read it on our website –
click on Convention and scroll down to the bottom.

October Meeting
The October meeting was held at the Library preceding the regular Saturday concert. Leslie Spotz, Assistant Professor of Piano at Tarleton and a Mu Phi, was the performer. She played
Träumerei, Op. 15, No. 7 and Romanze, Op. 28, No. 2 by Robert Schumann; Sonata in F minor Op. 57 “Appassionata,” by Beethoven; and
Sonata in B minor, Op. 58 by Frédéric Chopin. Pat says, “She put on such a fabulous program and, unfortunately, only four Mu Phis were there.” So sorry – your reminder person (Mary) was traveling and didn’t send e-mails, nor did your contact committee call. Please put ALL the meetings on your calendar so you don’t miss these wonderful programs.

Chapter News
Just missing the last newsletter was the notice that Jenny Smith-Jared received, awarding her the Outstanding District Director for this past year. She helped local collegiate chapters put together a great collegiate district conference, among other accomplishments. Congratulations Jenny! She is also working on attracting new members to our chapter. Who do you know? Give her a call.
Regarding our last newsletter's note on tax-exempt gifts - It read:
Our individual chapters do not have 501/3(c) status, though our parent organization does. Gifts may be made through the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation, as well as through Friends of the Library for gifts for our concert series expenses. These funds are then returned to our chapter for our use.
This is not correct terminology. To clarify:
For those who want a tax deduction for contributions to support our projects (concert series or scholarships), we suggest that they contribute it to one of two organizations:
 |
Friends of the Library with a designation for our concert series, as the series is jointly sponsored by the Mu Phi Epsilon Dallas Alumni Chapter and the Dallas Public Library. The Friends of the Library group has 501/3(C) status, though it has nothing to do with Mu Phi Epsilon locally or internationally. We can then use the money for series expenses such as piano maintenance and printing. |
 |
Or contributions can be sent to the Mu Phi Epsilon International Executive Office
(IEO), Gloria Debatin - 4705 N. Sonora, Ste. 114, Fresno, CA 93722-3947 - designated to our chapter for support of our concert series or for our scholarships. |
And we do welcome donations!
